Volvo introduces PM2.5 air filtering system for its cars

Volvo has unveiled a new air-cleaning system for its cars that can filter up to 95 per cent of PM2.5 fine particles, which the company claims to be a world first.

Volvo's 'Advanced Air Cleaner' technology comes with a sensor that measures levels of harmful PM2.5 inside the cabin. The filter system will be available on all 60 and 90 series Volvo car models.

The PM2.5 particulates are a carcinogen and can penetrate deep into the lungs, blood streams and brain, causing health problems including heart attacks, respiratory disease and premature death.

Volvo said its system uses a synthetic fibre-based filter and ionisation to clean up to 95 per cent of particles in a vehicle cabin.

The automaker said that as well as the health benefits, cleaner air inside the car also helps to advance safe driving as fresher air can help boost driver concentration.

Drivers of relevant Volvo models can also use the 'Volvo On Call' smartphone app to schedule an extra cleaning of the cabin air ahead of their journey. The app then tells drivers about the actual PM2.5 levels inside the cabin after cleaning.

“With our Advanced Air Cleaner technology, you can rest assured that the air you breathe inside your Volvo is cleaner and healthier,” said Anders Löfvendahl, a senior technical expert at Volvo Cars.

“We believe that clean air is good for you, both from a health and from a safety perspective, and we will continue to push the envelope in this area.”

Volvo said that its engineers have also worked on creating a healthy environment inside its cars in other ways, such as by removing emissions from organic substances in the car and minimising the amount of allergy-causing materials.

In August, a study found that by following cleaner routes and setting a vehicle’s ventilation settings appropriately, drivers can reduce PM2.5 in cabins by an average of 49 per cent.
