According to the secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the UK government will soon issue a final decision on Huawei's participation in Britain's 5G project.

Nicky Morgan told journalists that Britain aims to decide this autumn whether to permit Huawei's equipment to be used in its 5G networks.

According to an interview with the BBC, Morgan said: “We will make the right decision for the UK. I would hope we could do something by the autumn”.

As a response to Morgan's announcement, Huawei told E&T that over the last 18 years it helped build the UK’s broadband, 3G and 4G networks and "as independent analysts agree, we can help British operators develop 5G networks that are more secure, more affordable and completed more quickly – helping to keep bills down for consumers and connect rural areas".

On Twitter, Morgan retweeted Boris Johnson's thread concerning local growth via speedy connectivity:

Morgan told journalists, “We’ve got to make sure that this is going to be a decision for the long term, making sure that we keep all our networks secure.”

In her ambition to win enthusiasm for 5G within rural areas, Morgan yesterday announced a UK-wide £30m competition.

"Huawei continues to work with network operators to roll out 5G across Britain and many other countries globally to help improve their economies and we look forward to the UK Government’s decision in the autumn on our future involvement here”, a Huawei spokesperson said.

In early August, E&T reported on the 5G network launch in South Korea, which also revealed one of the operators was using Huawei as an equipment supplier.

In June, Morgan's predecessor Jeremy Wright warned British telecom companies that they should exercise caution about using Huawei-made technologies.
