The robots are coming for our jobs and models are no exception. For the first time, a robot is set to join human models walking the runway at London Fashion Week in a collaboration between LA-based designer Honee, OhmniLabs and Kambria.
Honee – an artist and industrial designer as well as a fashion designer – often combines different media in her designs, which feature dramatic silhouettes and unusual texture combinations. Now, she is pairing up with technology companies OhmniLabs and Kambria to combine her designs with their visually appealing technologies at London Fashion Week.
OhmniLabs and Kambria aim to enable ‘forward thinking’ across various industries, including health, social care and fashion. Through this project, Honee and her collaborators are aiming for robots to be viewed as a typical part of everyday life, rather than as futuristic, intangible and unobtainable objects.
The OhmniLabs robot will walk alongside human models during Honee’s solo segment.
“We’re excited to have our Ohmni robots walk the runway at London Fashion Week. Our partnership with Honee and the House of iKons shows how robotics and the fashion world can creatively work together,” said Thuc Vu, CEO of OhmniLabs and Kambria.
The new collection will be inspired by the theme of ‘telepresence’, which allow for people to communicate at a distance while retaining a sort of ‘presence’, such as by using a telepresence robot (which tends to look like an eye-level iPad attached to a Segway) in a distant office.
“My show with the House of iKons this September is named ‘ÁI’ in reference to artificial intelligence and also the play on the Vietnamese word ÁI for love and the Chinese phonetic AI for love as well,” said Honee in a statement.
“We’re in the world of AI and loving it. I use fashion as the language to express the skins we are in. In my upcoming show, it’s not about the future of robots, of a world unknown, but of the presence, the now. OhmniLabs is ushering in the world of now with their telepresence robots.”
The designer will be displaying her creations on the Ohmni robot at the Millennium Gloucester London Hotel on September 15 and 16 during London Fashion Week. Her designs remain strictly under wraps until the event.
