Segway KickScooter: higher-speed, longer-range scooters announced

Segway has released details of new lightweight foldable ‘e-scooters’ capable of reaching speeds of 30km/h and with a range of up to 45km that are due to go on sale later this year.

The ES1 and ES2 KickScooters will be marketed under the ‘Ninebot by Segway’ brand, which was established following Segway’s acquisition in 2015 by Chinese transport robotics startup Ninebot.

The ES1 has a maximum speed of 20km/h, with a range of around 25km depending on payload, riding style and terrain. It also features an LED digital display, anti-lock brake system and cruise control.

The higher-spec ES2 has a higher maximum speed of approximately 25km/h with similar range and is equipped with rear shock absorption and customisable ambient and rear lights. An optional second battery increases the scooter’s range to a potential 45km and enables ES2 riders to reach speeds of up to 30km/h.

Both KickScooters feature a one-touch folding system, share a companion smartphone app and are claimed to be light enough to be easy to carry on public transport or store in a car, suggesting that Segway sees commuters as a significant market.

The ES1 and ES2 will be on show at the IFA 2017 consumer technology show in Berlin from 1-6 September 2017 and available to buy in the fourth quarter of 2017. Prices are still to be confirmed.
