Xbox One X: Microsoft says new console is the most powerful yet
Microsoft has revealed the “world’s most powerful console”, the Xbox One X which contains the fastest processor chip ever used in a games console and is designed with 4K gaming in mind.
The One X will go on sale on 7 November for £449 in the UK, Microsoft confirmed during a showcase ahead of E3, one of the gaming industry’s largest conventions.
The console, originally known as Project Scorpio, is set to rival Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro - launched last year - as the flagship games console on the market.
Microsoft has been under pressure to overtake Sony, after the current generation PS4 steadily outsold the Xbox One following the launch of the two systems in 2013.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the new system would also feature the “most diverse” line-up of games ever produced by the firm.
During a press conference, some of the first of these games were previewed, including a new game from the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise - Origins.
Microsoft also demonstrated a new game in its exclusive racing series, Forza Motorsport 7.
The Xbox boss also announced that the console’s backward compatibility scheme - which enables old games from previous consoles to be played on the newest systems - was being extended to the original Xbox.
Spencer said video games should be “celebrated” in the same way as books and films.
“Xbox empowers game developers, large and small, to create different types of games for every type of player,” he said.
“Not only do we have the biggest cross-platform blockbusters on our platform, we’ve also scoured the world to bring our fans unique content from creative artists that capture the imagination.”
Fellow gaming giants Nintendo and Sony are among those who are also due to unveil a host of new games during E3, while the next game in the Call Of Duty series is also expected to be demoed for the first time.
Games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls, from IHS Markit, said keen gamers will not be put off by the high £449 price point.
“Even if the price point was revealed to be higher than this, we did not expect this to impact sales of the console at launch,” he said.
“Xbox enthusiasts will pay significant sums to get hold of the latest and greatest.”
The E3 show floor officially opens in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Fifa 18 to include new motion capture technology
Fifa 18, the next instalment in the football game series, was also unveiled at E3, its developers said it was the “single biggest leap forward” for the franchise.
The popular football game will use a new motion technology system to more realistically depict player movement, including that of this year’s cover star, Cristiano Ronaldo.
The game’s soap opera-style career mode, The Journey, will also return when the game launches in the autumn, publisher EA Sports said.
The announcement was made ahead of E3, the leading video games convention, which takes place in Los Angeles next week.
For only the second year, the game has been built using the high-powered Frostbite graphics engine, which EA Sports said means players look more lifelike than previous games.
The game is one of the most popular series in the UK, having first launched as Fifa International Soccer in 1993.
For Fifa 18, changes have also been made to the gameplay, with a new crossing and through ball system introduced, designed to improve accuracy, EA said.
More extensive motion capturing involving some of the world’s best players, including Real Madrid star Ronaldo, has been used to create a wider range of individual player movement and styles within the new game.
EA Sports says players in the game are now more fluid and responsive as a result.
Upgrades have also been made to the game’s presentation, with changes in lighting to reflect stadiums in different parts of the world and dynamic weather introduced for the first time.
