Jaguar announces I-Pace concept car, its first electric vehicle
Jaguar has revealed its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace concept car, calling it “the smartest five-seater sports car, a performance car, a family car and an SUV all in one”.
The preview car has been unveiled a little over a year ahead of the production model, which is scheduled to hit the road some time in 2018. Being the first electric model from Jaguar, the design and engineering team focused on making the most of new performance opportunities provided by moving to electrification over standard fuel propulsion.
The all-wheel-drive I-Pace features a new battery pack and twin electric motors – one each for front and rear axles – designed and engineered by Jaguar Land Rover to deliver outstanding efficiency, generating 700Nm of torque (the same torque rating as the F-TYPE SVR) and 400PS. A range of over 500km is promised on the New European Driving Cycle, meaning the average user would only need to charge the vehicle once a week.
Charging is quick, with an 80 per cent charge achieved in 90 minutes and 100 per cent in just over two hours using 50kW DC charging.
The in-cabin experience is suitably future-facing, with two intuitive touchscreens providing information and feedback where and when the driver needs it. The interior of the vehicle is typical of Jaguar’s sense of understated luxury, with premium materials and tactile details throughout.
Building on Jaguar’s established track record and experience in sports car technology, the I-Pace goes from 0-60mph in approximately four seconds.
Ian Callum, Director of Design, said: “The I-PACE Concept represents the next generation of electric vehicle design. It's a dramatic, future-facing cab-forward design with a beautiful interior – the product of authentic Jaguar DNA, electric technology and contemporary craftsmanship.”
Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “This is an uncompromised electric vehicle designed from a clean sheet of paper. We’ve developed a new architecture and selected only the best technology available.”
The Concept will make its first public physical appearance at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday 16 November. The global preview launch today was facilitated by a world-first, live cross-continent VR reveal experience, transporting the audience into a virtual world to explore the I-Pace Concept. HTC Vive and Dell were technology partners for the VR experience.
Using HTC Vive Business Edition headsets, powered by Dell Precision workstations, guests could site themselves at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, and sit inside the concept car as it was built piece-by-piece around them. The car also appeared to fall to Earth from another planet before speeding towards them, presumably to reinforce the other-worldly spirit of the I-Pace.
The VR content from the reveal will also be made available on Vive Port through a dedicated Jaguar app, allowing prospective customers to experience the I-Pace Concept at home.
