Apple profits soar but it stays coy on Apple Watch sales

Apple has announced yet more profits in its latest financial results, but would not be drawn into releasing the sales figures for the Apple Watch.

The company revealed profits of £6.8bn and revenue of £31.8bn, which were led by record third quarter sales of its iPhone and Mac computer products. But no exact sales numbers for the Apple Watch, which was launched with much fanfare in April, were confirmed and the company only stated the watch had had a “successful launch.”

But the Apple watch was included in the California firm’s “Other Products” category in the results and that element grew by around a billion US Dollars in the last quarter. Although that suggests a strong start for the Apple Watch, the company maintained that conclusions could not be accurately taken from the “Other Products” figures.

Speaking about the record profits, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said: "We had an amazing quarter, with iPhone revenue up 59 per cent over last year, strong sales of Mac, all-time record revenue from services, driven by the App Store, and a great start for Apple Watch."

Apple revealed it had sold more than 47 million iPhones between April and the end of June along with 10 million iPads. However, that represents a further drop in sales for Apple’s flagship tablet, which has been in steady decline for some time.

Microsoft, Apple’s technology competitor, reported the biggest quarterly loss in its history, £1.3bn for the fourth quarter of the financial year with a revenue of £14bn, as a result of its £4.8bn acquisition of Nokia. However, Microsoft did announce a 117 per cent increase in its Surface tablet business, that is a rival to the iPad, and it is now worth £570m.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella said: "Our approach to investing in areas where we have differentiation and opportunity is paying off with Surface, Xbox, Bing, Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM Online all growing by at least double-digits."
