IK Multimedia's iRig 2 features a 1/4" output jack

New year new gear for iOS guitarists with iRig 2

Italian software developer IK Multimedia has announced iRig 2, the latest iteration of its celebrated hardware guitar interface for iOS, Mac and Android devices.

Billed by IK as “the successor to the most popular mobile guitar interface of all time”, iRig 2 introduces a more versatile input gain control, a 1/4in amplifier output jack and Android compatibility, in addition to the existing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac support.

The new 1/4in amplifier output is in addition to the 1/8in headphone output and allows musicians to use iRig 2 directly with their favourite amplifier without the need of an adaptor. This enables guitarists to pair iRig 2 with AmpliTube®, IK's software guitar and bass multi-effects processor, and play through the modelled virtual stompbox effects, amplifiers and other gear as part of their physical rig.

A dual-mode switch is also new with iRig 2: FX lets musicians send a processed signal to their amplifier's 1/4in output from apps such as AmpliTube, while THRU sends a clean signal. This allows musicians to use their mobile device as a tuner, recorder or other utility when using their existing hardware rig and thus maintain the purity of a 100 per cent analogue signal path.

The input gain thumbwheel has been improved to make it easier to fine tune the ideal setting, whatever instrument is connected. Any guitar, bass or line-level instrument can be connected to the 1/4in jack. Meanwhile, the built-in universal 1/8in TRRS output connector provides true plug-and-play compatibility with iPhone, iPod touch, Mac and Android. Any device with an 1/8in input that supports the CTIA/AHJ wiring standard will work with iRig 2.

A free version of AmpliTube is included with iRig 2. The interface also works with any other recording, processing, tuning or music app.

The iRig 2 interface is expected to start shipping in Q1 2015, available from the IK Online Store and select music and consumer electronics retailers worldwide. The price will be €29.99/$39.99.

IK also announced that its iRig Mic Field stereo digital microphone for audio and video field recording is now shipping. As E&T reported last year, iRig Mic Field features two high-quality cardioid electret condenser capsules, a 24-bit audiophile-grade A/D converter (44.1/48kHz sample rate), 115dB maximum SPL rating and a built-in low-noise, high-definition preamp for quality sound capture anywhere, on any compatible iOS device.

The iRig Mic Field is available from the IK Online Store and select music and consumer electronics retailers worldwide. The price is €79.99/$99.99.
