The Russian equivalent of the European eCall system for alerting emergency services to car accidents has been demonstrated at the WMC.
Known as ERA GLONASS, the system, relying on the Russian navigation satellite constellation GLONASS, uses components developed for Russia by automotive parts and systems supplier Ficosa and Oberthur Technologies, a digital security solutions provider for the mobility sector.
During the World Mobile Congress, the companies demonstrated the system using a telematic unit, developed by FICOSA, which incorporates a special SIM together with a user interface module. The device, installed inside a vehicle, enables emergency calls to be made automatically in case of a car crash with the exact location of the vehicle determined via the navigation satellites.
The system is designed to reduce the time emergency services need to arrive at a car crash site by up to 30 per cent.
According to estimates, speeding up the emergency response could save up to 4,000 lives a year.
The ERA GLONASS system, similar to European eCall, should be in place in Russia by January 2015.
