iPad cash register firm opens office in Belfast

A New York-based software company that allows iPads to be used as cash registers is to create 35 new jobs in Belfast.

Around 10,000 firms from ice cream parlours to garden centres use the ShopKeep POS product in the USA and Canada and the fast-growing technology firm wants to expand into Europe.

Retailers use its app to ring up sales, take credit cards and print receipts and it enables the storing and analysis of data.

Founder and chief executive Jason Richelson said: "We are thrilled to open our first overseas office in Northern Ireland, which will serve as a launch pad to expand our operations into Europe.

"We considered a number of locations for our European site, but after visiting Northern Ireland I was extremely excited and fell in love with Belfast."

The Stormont devolved government's jobs creation agency Invest NI offered £245,000 start-up money towards the near £3m venture and 10 of the 35 positions are already in place.

ShopKeep is recruiting additional mobile software developers to service its current products and accelerate the expansion of its product range. It has tripled the business every year for the last three years.

Stormont enterprise minister Arlene Foster said: "The decision by ShopKeep to establish its European office in Belfast is another endorsement of our business-friendly, cost-competitive environment that has attracted so many ICT investors over the years.

"ShopKeep is creating 35 high-value jobs that will contribute almost £1.3m annually to the economy. I understand that the company has aggressive growth targets for the next three years and I'm confident that the new Northern Ireland location will play an important role in supporting that growth.

"This is an excellent example of a small business idea that has grown into a highly competitive company."
