Solar-powered research vessel visits London

Solar-powered catamaran the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar arrived in London on 31 August at the end of a data-gathering mission.

The mission will help scientists develop a better understanding of the complex interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere and how they affect the global climate.

The London stopover concluded the PlanetSolar DeepWater scientific expedition, carried out in collaboration with the University of Geneva (UNIGE), which led the ship and her crew of sailors and researchers for over 8,000km along the trail of the Gulf Stream, the primary regulator of European and North American climate, collecting a continuous series of physical and biological measurements, both in the water and in the air, using advanced instruments to monitor aerosols and phytoplankton.

The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar was built in Kiel, Germany, and completed the first solar-powered trip around the world in May 2012 after a voyage of 584 days.
