Samsung to launch smartwatch in September

The South Korean electronics giant has said its innovative smartwatch gadget will be unveiled on 4 September in Berlin, Germany, at the IFA Consumer Electronics fair.

Named the Galaxy Gear, Samsung said its new high tech product will target young tech trend-setters.

"We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on 4 September," said Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business

"The Gear won't have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications,” she said.

Little information has been made available regarding the smartwatch. It is expected to feature a screen controlled by a small panel with keys similar to those of Samsung’s Galaxy Android handset.

The watch is believed to be able to make and receive phone calls, send emails and text messages and store information.

"We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry," Lee Young-hee said, hinting more advanced gadgets are readying in Samsung’s laboratories.

"We have intellectual properties for patents related to the next wearable devices," she said. "Those are concepts for future products."

It is expected Google and Apple are already working on a similar device.
