Hannover Messe 2013: industrial integration will prove key.

E&T magazine is again a preferred media partner for this year's Hannover Messe showcase of industrial and engineering technology innovation. This last of three previews surveys in brief the technology-specific trade shows that make-up Hannover Messe 2013 - and includes details of FREE ENTRY for IET members.

The world's leading annual showcase for industrial and related technologies - Hannover Messe 2013 (Hanover, Germany, 8-12 April) - will feature 11 flagship fairs taking place under this year's banner theme of 'Integrated Industry': the theme signals the fair's key foci on the growing integration of all areas of industry.

From 'Industry 4.0' to energy transition, demographic change and resource efficiency, there are many research areas that resonate with future developments. For instance, exhibiting institutes, universities and companies in Hall 2 are future-facing, and will discuss with partners in business and politics the technological changes and developments required to meet challenges facing industry in the years ahead. Intelligent production systems and processes and the realisation and coordination of networked, geographically distributed production sites are vital to making 'Integrated Industry' a reality. The Industrial Automation tradeshow will put the spotlight on integrated automation processes with themes like Embedded Systems and Smart Production.

The lead theme will also be manifested in the Motion Drive & Automation tradeshow, including the Condition Monitoring Systems displays.

Industrial automation and power transmission and control technologies are also converging as the industrial world digitalises. This trend is reflected in the fact that more suppliers of power transmission, linear motion, and industrial gear systems, are offering turnkey automation solutions; the 'Integrated Industry' ideal spearheads this trend.

Smart grids, in particular, are coming to the fore as Germany makes increasing use of distributed forms of generation. This trend is reflected at the Energy tradeshow, which provides an integrated perspective on current energy-sector issues and challenges. Hannover Messe's energy focus is complemented by the Wind show, with its array of displays and exhibits showing how integrated wind turbine maintenance and control systems can help the challenges of energy system transformation. Similarly, innovations on display at the MobiliTec tradeshow are all about industrial integration. Translating the electric mobility technologies on show at MobiliTec into mainstream reality requires disparate industry sectors of industry to collaborate in new ways.

The significance of the potential of 'Integrated Industry' will also strike a keynote at the Digital Factory show, where the focus is on process integration and interdisciplinary product development. This show has a focus on systems engineering for more effective coordination of different disciplines within the engineering sector.

The ComVac show outlines ways of making production processes more energy-efficient. Compressed air technology is a technology that is now used by almost every industrial sector. Failure to integrate it properly into industrial production at the process design stage can result in lost efficiencies.

Many exhibitors at the Industrial Supply show are subcontractors who are directly integrated into their customers' production and planning processes. Production chains that span multiple providers rely for their success and effectiveness on integrated subcontracting solutions and services. The SurfaceTechnology show is where exhibitors present integrated surface systems and innovations in a range of fields, including nanotechnology.

SurfaceTechnology explores ways in which industrial companies can use surface technology to enhance the energy and resource-efficiency of their plants and processes.

IndustrialGreenTec exhibitors will highlight ways of integrating environmental management systems into existing business models, identifying opportunities for developing new, eco-friendly products and streamlining complex systems and processes. At IndustrialGreenTec, 'Integrated Industry' is all about being greener and smarter than the competition.

'Integrated Industry' begins with research and development - early-stage interaction between science and business. The Research & Technology show is the place where scientists, engineers, developers, and managers learn about the most recent innovation initiatives, make new contacts, and form interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral networks.
