Ford is expanding its investigation into reports of engine fires to Europe.
The company announced last week that it was recalling 2013 Fusion SE and SEL and 2013 Escape SE and SEL vehicles with 1.6-litre engines over risks of engine fires.
Ford said the recall came after reports of engines overheating, followed by vehicle fires starting in the engine compartment when the engine was running.
Ford said there were around 73,320 Escapes and 15,833 Fusions produced and distributed for sale in the U.S. and Canada with 1.6-litre engines, with most in the U.S. market. It told owners to stop driving their vehicles and use loan cars from dealers until the problem was fixed.
The company said it was now expanding the engine fire investigation to Europe after receiving seven reports of fires in 1.6-litre EcoBoost engines sold in Europe and used in the Focus, Mondeo and Galaxy models. Ford has not yet recalled any vehicles in Europe.
The company said it has not determined the cause of the engine fires.
