National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Awards winner 2012

Gangway for boat crews wins NI's design award

A gangway that can keep itself still on the rolling seas to allow boat crews to climb onto offshore wind turbines won this year’s National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Awards.

The award was presented at the IET’s Savoy Place to Andy Clegg and Petros Savidis of Industrial Systems and Control.

They used National Instruments’ LabView and CompactRIO to build a movable gangway with an algorithm that computes how to adjust the lengths of hydraulic cylinders to compensate for the movement of the vessel and keep the gangway relatively still.
