Google placed another big question mark over its plans for the set-top box (STB) business it acquired as part of Motorola Mobility (MMI) at IBC.
The supposed ‘for sale’ division unveiled 10 new boxes, eight of which are aimed at the IPTV market Google sought but failed to crack through a partnership with Logitech.
Four of the boxes run on open source KreaTV platform and four on Microsoft Mediaroom.
Cable operators have historically been Motorola’s bedrock STB customers but it was thought they would snub a Google-owned MMI because of growing broader rivalries in delivering content.
MMI’s heavy push on IPTV at a time when some analysts had expected the business to be put in a holding pattern now suggests that Google has not completely abandoned its broadcast ambitions.
