MasterCard and Everything Everywhere in NFC deal

Telecoms operator Everything Everywhere and payments company MasterCard have announced a five-year partnership to develop mobile and digital payment solutions for EE’s 27 million UK customers.

The first feature to launch will be a co-branded pre-paid service for mobile devices enabling EE's T-Mobile and Orange customers to make payments for goods and services using Near-Field Communications technology. EE reveals both customers and small businesses will benefit and be able to make contactless payments at more than 100,000 retailers across the UK.

Gerry McQuade, chief marketing officer at EE, said: “By moving our existing co-branded card offers onto mobile devices, we are closer to a world where our customers will be able to use their phone to pay for travel to work and small purchases, and take advantage of loyalty rewards from their favourite retail outlets.”

Over the five-year partnership, both firms will expand into areas such as person-to-person money transfers, loyalty rewards and digital payment services that aim to enable customers to have the same shopping experience whether paying in-store, online or using their mobile device.

The NFC-enabled smartphones are expected to be announced by late Q1 2013.
