Design drawings for Bloodhound SSC, the 1,000 mph world speed record car, are now available to view online.
Bloodhound’s 3D downloadable design drawings allow people to view all the engineering data, design work and concepts, take measurements of specific parts of the car and follow how design for the car develops.
Comprised of 4,000 individually-designed components, viewers can deconstruct the CAD (Computer Aided Design) model layer by layer rotate on all axes and zoom in and out, using professional engineering software from Siemens.
Bloodhound chief engineer Mark Chapman said it was “very much a live project” and as designs developed, the data on the website would continue to be updated. “We want people to see how this design evolves.”
“You can measure the suspension struts, you can work out the steering geometry – all this information is there to be used,” he said.
Bloodhound’s core aim is to inspire young people to pursue careers in one of the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and the design drawings will be distributed to over 4,500 schools and colleges across the UK.
John Wood, president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, one of the sponsors of the Bloodhound project, said: “It’s unprecedented to release detailed design data from a project like this, yet it’s part of the unique appeal and importance of Bloodhound to demonstrate how sophisticated engineering works.”

Chapman said two to three sites were being looked at for the first full test firing of the hybrid rocket for the car, due to take place this summer in the UK. Details of the location would be released in the next month, he said.
