The new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental

Boeing unveils 'green' 747 jumbo jet

Plane manufacturer Boeing has unveiled its latest "environmentally friendly" passenger 747 jumbo jet.

Officials claim the 747-8 Intercontinental offers the lowest seat-mile cost of any large commercial jetliner, while being quieter and creating less carbon emissions than its predecessor, the 747-400.

"The new 747-8 Intercontinental will set a new standard in economic and environmental performance, while providing a world-class passenger experience," said Pat Shanahan, vice president and general manager, Airplane Programmes, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The plane provides 16 per cent better fuel economy, 16 per cent less carbon emissions per passenger and generates a 30 per cent smaller noise footprint than the 747-400, according to the company. It can seat between 400 and 500 people.

Airlines Korean Air and Lufthansa have already placed orders for the plane.
