Centenary clock

Chinese centenary clock is made in UK

The headquarters of one of China’s largest construction companies now feature a UK-designed and built commemorative clock in the foyer.

The Century Clock was designed by leading UK clock-maker Smith of Derby for the East Asia Holding Company in Shanghai. Intricate engraving for the clock’s face was carried out by house signs manufacturer Sign Industries, of Forfar in Scotland.

Manufactured mostly in bronze, the clock shows important landmark dates for the company. The outer ring indicates the present year, the second ring the applicable annual Chinese zodiac symbol, the third ring indicates the time in hours and minutes and the innermost ring shows the day of the week. The centre shows the numeral for the month and then the day of the month. 60 years is a special anniversary in China so 2017 is highlighted in Chinese script.

"The projects assigned to us by Smith of Derby always prove to be really interesting pieces of work that we are honoured to contribute towards," said Gordon Norrie, managing director of Sign Industries. "The pictures that we have seen of the Century Clock in situ certainly show how magnificent this timepiece looks."
