USB probe offers low-cost PC temperature monitoring
A low-cost USB thermometer enables temperatures to be monitored and tracked in real-time using either a Windows PC or PDA, according to thermal specialist ETI.
The company said that its Precision USB Thermometer Probe, which costs from £23, has a measurement range of -40 to 125°C with a 0.1°C resolution and an accuracy of ±0.5°C. It combines an NTC thermistor with a 16-bit ADC and a simple USB communication interface.
Each probe also has a unique serial number, so the same PC can monitor several temperatures at the same time, and is USB-powered. Possible applications included computer/server room monitoring, warehouse monitoring and display cabinet monitoring, said ETI.
The device is supplied with monitoring software compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7; this software can log temperature readings into an Excel spreadsheet for analysis, ETI said. The company said that PDA software is also available, and added that the communication protocol is available on request to approved software engineers, enabling the probe to be integrated with third-party software applications.
