Software simulates Jaguar Land Rover robots

Control systems developer Autotech is using Tecnomatix Robcad robot simulation software to help develop and implement control systems that will go into automated production stations for Jaguar Land Rover’s new small Land Rover and Jaguar XJ.

“With Tecnomatix Robcad we are able to simulate and prove fully the functionality of robot cells before they are installed on the customer’s shop-floor,” explained Mark Demer, simulation manager at Autotech. “This reduces commissioning time, because there are far fewer issues to deal with during installation.

“It also gives our PLC (programmable logic controller) and robot programmers access to the virtual cells prior to installation, helping to ensure the generation of high quality, right-first-time control software, which again saves time, enabling the customer to get into full production sooner.”

Autotech said the first project for the new software would be its work for the Tier 1 suppliers developing the automated body-sides production lines and framing station for the small Land Rover at Halewood and the door production cells for the new Jaguar XJ at Castle Bromwich.

Tecnomatic Robcad is part of the Siemens PLM family of computer-aided manufacturing, process planning and simulation tools, and it enables the design, simulation, optimisation, analysis and off-line programming of multi-device robotic and automated manufacturing processes. The software was supplied to Autotech by CAD/CAM/CAE and PLM specialist Majenta Solutions.
