E&T columnist reaches World Cup final

E&T columnist Mike Barfield has hit a new note in scientific journalism: his song '(Don’t Set Your) Sights Too High' has made it to the final of BBC Radio Five Live's World Cup song contest.

The song was written and recorded by Mike on his Apple Mac at home in less than an hour. He was prompted to enter the competition in order to provide a humorous antidote to all the predictably jingoistic anthems that regularly accompany the England team's forays into world football.

Today, a text vote by listeners to the Victoria Derbyshire Show put him into Thursday's final.

"To make it into the Final, well, I'm now way beyond flabbergasted," Barfield said. "Words, for once, fail me. The other entries were all slickly produced studio anthems, with backing musicians and everything. Mine is just me, my ukulele and some whistling. But don't let that put you off."

E&T readers can hear Mike's entry on his Myspace music site and vote for him by text message (Thursday) to the Victoria Derbyshire Show between 10am and midday.
