Clip-together syringes could need no extra packaging

A product development firm has claimed that its new design for pre-filled plastic syringes could reduce packaging weight by 30 per cent and volume by 50 per cent by removing the need for secondary packaging altogether.

The Syreen syringe concept, put together by Cambridge Consultants, is intended as a drug delivery device for self administration. Instead of glass, the syringes are made with COP (cyclic olefin polymer) plastic, and clip together in a pack, so the COP itself doubles as the outer packaging shell.  

“What makes Syreen so exciting is that while it is a sustainable alternative to the status quo, it can truly introduce a paradigm shift in the existing supply chain,” claimed Phil Lever, commercial director for drug delivery devices at Cambridge Consultants.  “We found that typical glass syringes use many materials from all over the world and that shipping costs are egregious due to inefficiencies in packaging.  This marriage of economy and ecology shows that medical device companies will likely see competitive benefits by taking sustainability seriously.”

To use Syreen, the user unclips the pre-filled syringe and put it against the skin. After delivery, the user ejects the needle into the sharps bin, leaving the plastic capsule to be recycled where possible.  

Lever said that the design should also increase the safety of both the patient and the healthcare provider. The COP plastic syringe features a curved surface over the needle that, while keeping the syringe from rolling and reducing needle-stick accidents, also ensures overall stability and depth control during injection.  Secondly, the design separates the plunger and stopper, making it impossible to take in blood or other contaminants, so reducing the risk of cross infection.

He added that Cambridge Consultants is currently seeking to develop the Syreen concept with large pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical packaging companies.
