Offshore turbines announcement means thousands of jobs

Tens of thousands of jobs could follow the announcement of the successful bidders for nine offshore wind turbine sites around the UK.

The announcement, made on January 8, sees the UK Government moving towards its stated aim of providing 25% of the country’s electricity through wind by 2020.

Critics have pointed out that the UK’s grid would need a massive upgrade to cope with the new supply, that harbours are also currently inadequate for the scale of the proposed building projects – and that the renewables sector already faces a skills shortage.

A report from consultants Bain recently highlighted “acute” areas of shortages including project managers, electrical engineers and turbine technicians.
