IT salaries show first quarter dip

A study by recruitment specialist CV Screen has found that permanent IT salaries in the UK have fallen by 1 per cent over the last 12 months, with the average salary for an IT professional now earning £36,092.

The analysis of the IT jobs market looked at 50 different IT roles, and monitored over 6,000 advertised positions in the UK during Q1/2009.

“It is clear that demand for IT professionals has fallen dramatically,” says CV Screen managing director Matthew Iveson, “and with unemployment rising we have found that candidates are now being more realistic with their salary expectations."

He adds: “There are some bright spots where demand remains strong especially for candidates with strong .Net, SharePoint, Java, or PHP skills.”

The current recession in the UK has seen salaries fall, Iveson believes, but he anticipate that IT salaries will remain stagnant over the next 12-18 months when confidence returns to the sector.
