First industry compliant NFC chipset rolled out
Philips spinout, NXP semiconductor has unveiled the first industry compliant near field communication (NFC) controller designed for handset manufacturers and operators.
The NXP PN44 chip is based on specifications laid down by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI).
NFC technology is seen as key to enable a raft of new contactless applications such as mobile payments, transport and event ticketing – as well as data sharing directly from the mobile phone SIM and memory.
“Standardised SIM-based NFC dhipsets provide a solid foundation for NFC adoption,” said Jonathan Collins, principal analyst, Short Range Wireless, ABI Research.
NXP says that the new controller is backwards compatible with existing contactless technologies – such as the MIFARE system which is used in Transport For London’s Oyster Card system.
