Andrew brings mobile coverage to 57km Swiss rail tunnel

“I’m under a mountain, on the phone”

Andrew will provide a multi-band, multi-operator fibre-distributed antenna system and radiating cables to spread reliable, high-performance wireless coverage throughout the tunnel. It will be used by railway operators and emergency personnel, as well as public 2G and 3G mobile network customers.

The system will have to deal with the high-speed handoffs between cells as passengers pass through the tunnel as up to 250km/h. Andrew’s distribution system will use more than 600 remote units to cover 153km of tunnels, including the main tunnel and various access and service routes.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be part of a new flat rail link through the Swiss Alps. At 57km long it will be the longest tunnel in the world and should become operational at the end of 2017.
