UMC changes top positions

UMC has replaced the two executives heading the Taiwanese foundry with “younger and more energetic management”, the company said.

Stan Hung has been elected to the position of UMC’s chairman and Dr Shih-Wei Sun (pictured) becomes CEO in a move that sees the two positions split following the five-year stint of Dr Jackson Hu at the helm of the company. Hu will pursue a role as a senior advisor to UMC.

In a statement, the company said: “The appointment of a youthful, professional management team is aimed at the revitalisation of UMC and the enhancement of its focus on delivering customer-oriented foundry solutions.

Hu noted: "During my five-plus years of service at UMC, I have been very impressed by the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved in the organisation. I feel that I have accomplished many of my objectives and that the timing is right for a younger and more energetic management team to take over.”
Shih-Wei Sun is currently UMC’s chief operating officer, handling for 12in wafer-fab operations. He joined UMC in 1995.
