Small manufacturer tops list of greenest UK companies
Two UK manufacturing firms, one large and another very small, are among the top ten firms in the Sunday Times 50 Best Green Companies, which has been compiled for the first time this year.
The larger company is St Gobain Glass UK, which has developed a self-cleaning glass and also claims to use five times more recycled glass in its manufacturing than any of its competitors.
However, the number one company in the list is a small manufacturer. North East-based coffin maker J C Atkinson and Sons uses wood from sustainable forests.
The firm, which produces 60,000 coffins a year and has 10 per cent of the UK market, also saves 50,000 litres of water a year by collecting rainwater from the factory roof and has installed a biomass generator which uses waste wood to produce power.
Other manufacturers in the top 50 are cold-rolled-steel producer Metsec (number 21), bed and furniture maker Warren Evans (34) and chipboard maker Sonae UK (35).
