ASR designed for both service providers and enterprises Cisco says

Cisco launched its Aggregation Services Router (ASR) platform at CeBIT this week, after a five-year development at a claimed cost of over $250m

The ASR 1000 Series features a range of new features, including software virtualisation, 'instant-on' provisioning enablement, and simultaneous use of a range of service functionality, including firewall, IPSec VPNs, deep-packet inspection and Session Border Control.

Under the bonnet, the ASR 1000 is driven by the Cisco QuantumFlow Processor (QFP), what's claimed to be the industry's first fully-integrated and programmable router and service engine. The ASR 1000 also features IOS XE software, a virtualised IOS implementation optimised for compact routers at the edge to deliver in-service upgrades in a form factor much smaller than previously possible. In addition, IOS XE provides IOS command line control.

"The ASR 1000 is designed to help the corporate and service provider networks cope with the demands being placed on them as a result of increasing Web traffic and bandwidth hungry services and applications - such as video communications and IPTV," said Pankaj Patel, senior VP & general manager of the Cisco Service Provider Technology Group. "[It] combines all of the necessary service features into a single router platform, resulting in a substantial increase in IP-forwarding performance."

The Cisco ASR 1000 series will be generally available in April 2008 in two, four and six rack unit sizes, with pricing starting at $35,000.
