These are the general terms and conditions for E&T competitions and giveaways.

The Eccentric Engineer caption competition

The closing date for the caption competition on the ‘Eccentric Engineer’ page in each month’s E&T magazine is as specified in that issue. Entries should be sent to engtechmag@theiet.org from an email address at which you can be contacted if you are selected as the winner.

Readers may suggest as many captions as they like for each competition.

The competition is not open to employees of IET and their families.

Winners will be notified by post or email within two weeks of the closing date.

The prize will be awarded to the sender of the wittiest caption, as chosen by members of the magazine’s editorial team. Their decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

No purchase necessary. No cash alternatives will be offered. Allow four weeks for delivery of your prize. In the case that prizes may become unavailable, an alternative of equal value will be given. The IET reserves the right to withhold prizes.

Winners’ names will appear in the magazine, or can be obtained by writing to the Features Editor, E&T, Michael Faraday House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Herts SG1 2AY (features.editor@theiet.org).

Thinking Cap

The closing date for entries to the ‘Thinking Cap’ competition in each month’s E&T is as given in that issue. Entries should be sent to david@davidsandham.com from an email address at which you can be contacted if you are selected as the winner.

Only one entry per person.

The competition is not open to employees of the IET and their families.

Winners will be notified by post or email within two weeks of the closing date.

The editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

World’s Worst Banger competition

  1. The subject of ‘The World’s Worst Banger’ competition is to take photos of decrepit and badly maintained, yet still driveable, cars posing menace on roads. The theme is open to interpretation but entries must carry a warm and humorous message at their heart.
  2. Entrants can submit up to three digital photos of minimum 1Mb resolution each; prints or slides cannot be considered.
  3. Images may be digitally enhanced to remove spots or scratches, but not manipulated. Entrants can enhance the picture to make it brighter, clearer etc, but not manipulate the content. E&T magazine and the judges reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated so as to alter its authenticity. Photographs that would be considered inappropriate for publication in E&T magazine are not eligible.
  4. Employees of the Institution of Engineering and Technology or its subsidiary companies, as well as their immediate families, are not eligible to enter. Entrants under the age of 12 years need to have parent or guardian consent to enter.
  5. Entrants must not be professional photographers. For the purposes of this competition, a professional photographer will be considered to be someone who makes more than half their annual income from the sale of their photographs.
  6. Each entry should be accompanied by name, address, contact telephone number (both daytime and evening) and where the photo was taken.
  7. Entries should be sent to vvitaliev@theiet.org and/or via Twitter to @eandtmagazine, or uploaded to any websites created by E&T for the purposes of this competition.
  8. The competition closes at midnight on the 31st of October 2017.
  9. A panel of judges will select TEN best entries, based on a range of factors including message, location, quality and humorous content, which will then be published in E&T magazine and on the magazine’s website, and the readers will be invited to vote for the photo of what they believe is the ‘world’s worst banger’. The votes will be calculated by the judging panel, and the author of the winning photo will receive THE PRIZE - a set of three coffee table photo albums courtesy of Jonglez publishers.  There is no cash alternative and it cannot be sold or transferred.
  10. The judges' decisions will be final and no correspondence can be entered into.
  11. The winning entries and any other entries selected by the judges may be published in E&T magazine and other electronic media published by the IET.
  12. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrant must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. Further, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.
  13. Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale, been paid for any publication of any of their entries or won or been a runner up in any other photographic competition with any of their entries.
  14. Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit. By entering the competition all entrants grant to the IET the right to publish and exhibit their photographs in any print publication and on any website. Entrants whose photographs are selected to appear in print and electronic publications grant to the IET (including its subsidiaries and partners) the further rights to publish and exhibit their photographs in print, on their respective websites or in any other media. No fees will be payable for any of the above uses. While the IET will make every effort to credit photographers, including in printed reproductions of their work, it cannot guarantee that every use of the photographs will include photographers' names.
  15. By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and the IET reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if the IET has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.
  16. The IET reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter any of the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control.
  17. If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, the IET reserves the right to either offer the prize to a runner up or to re-offer the prize in any future competition.
  18. These rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales. This competition is administered by the IET.

Giveaways

Giveaways run on the E&T website or via the magazine’s social media channels are open to UK entrants only. Employees of the IET and their families may not enter.

Entries must be submitted as specified in the competition details, before the closing date given.

Prizes are as described. There is no cash alternative and the prize is not transferable. . In the case that prizes become unavailable, an alternative of equal value will be given. The IET reserves the right to withhold prizes.

A winner or winners will be picked at random and contacted via email or social media. If they do not respond within three days, another winner will be picked. Winners’ names will be announced after the prize has been claimed, and the prize delivered as soon as possible.

Entrants’ details will be used only in connection with this competition and not retained or passed to any third parties.
