BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill

BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig on fire The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. Triggered by the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig on April 20 2010, which killed 11 men, the spill flowed for three months with an estimated 53,000 barrels per day escaping from the well. On July 15, 2010, the leak was finally stopped by capping the gushing wellhead, but only after it had released approximately 4.9 million barrels (780,000 m3) of crude oil in to the Gulf of Mexico. The environmental impact of this was enormous. The U.S. Government named BP as the responsible party and officials committed to holding the company accountable for all cleanup costs and other damage. After its own internal probe, BP admitted that it made mistakes which led to the oil spill.
