Cyber security and innovation behind BT’s recruitment drive
BT has announced 1,400 new apprenticeships and graduate positions
Telecoms giant BT will hire 1,400 new apprentices and graduates to fill positions in cyber security, software development and research.
The new positions will be located all over the UK, with the majority in London, Glasgow, Swansea, Belfast and Liverpool.
"Technology is changing all the time and companies need to support and train young people to develop the skills required for successful careers in essential areas such as science, engineering and information technology,” said Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT.
"The UK has been ranked as the leading digital economy in the G20 for the past five years, and our investment in these people will help this continue."
About a third of the new recruits will be employed by Openreach, BT’s arm responsible for construction and maintenance of the local phone and broadband network.
"I'm delighted that Openreach is able to create so many opportunities for school and university leavers across the UK,” said Clive Selley, chief executive of Openreach.
"It is vital that we invest in young people to ensure the UK remains a digital powerhouse. The new recruits will be at the heart of the company's transformation."
Multiple positions will be offered at BT’s research campus near Ipswich, in Suffolk, focusing on development of future communications technologies such as the ultrafast broadband project G.fast.
Some of the new recruits will work on the roll out of superfast fibre broadband, into which BT is currently investing billions of pounds.
"These apprenticeships at BT will offer people the hands-on experience they need to succeed,” commented skills minister Nick Boles. “I would encourage more businesses to follow their lead and hire apprentices."
The 1,400 apprenticeship and graduate jobs are in addition to the 1,700 the company has created over the past two years.
The UK government aims to create three million more apprenticeships by 2020.
