A new wearable device developed by a US-based start-up monitors whether user gets enough sun exposure to produce vitamin D but avoids damage from UV radiation.

The device, named Violet, could be connected to an Android smartphone or an iPhone to provide real-time data over sun exposure.

"Over-exposure to sunlight can increase the risk of skin cancer, skin aging, immune suppression and eye damage. But under-exposure to sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiency - a major risk factor for bone diseases, diabetes, depression, some common cancers and cardiovascular diseases," said Nattapon Chaimanonart, CEO of Ultra, the Portland-based start-up who had developed the device which is currently available for pre-orders on Kickstarter.

The device can be worn on a wrist, attached to an article of clothing or simply set within close proximity of the user. Each device can be configured for multiple users with personalised settings.

"Ultra created an outstanding device with unique solutions relevant to a growing population of health conscious individuals concerning the important health effects of both UV over-exposure and vitamin D deficiency," said Andrew Blauvelt, dermatologist and President of the Oregon Medical Research Center. "There is no similar product on the market. Violet is the only device capable of capturing both UV exposure and vitamin D production data, and personalizing them to achieve balance for each end user."
