ICANN unveils internet Top-Level Domain name applications
A list of new generic Top-Level Domain names have been released by ICANN.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released a list for new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names.
ICANN developed the gTLD program to increase competition and choice by introducing new gTLDs into the internet’s addressing system, it said.
The first round of domain name submissions closed on 30 May, and today ICANN published the full list of applications, which could be additions to the familiar .com, .net and .org.
The domain name .sucks has been requested by two companies - Top Level Spectrum Inc. and Vox Populi Registry Inc. The more risque .sex also has two requests - from Internet Marketing Solutions Limited and ICM Registry, who also asked for .porn. And Uniregistry Corp. has put a bid in for .sexy.
Big companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon have applied for multiple domain names. Among Google's requests are .google, .gmail, .hangout .youtube, and .and. The search giant also requested .music but has competition from Amazon and six other organisations.
Other popular gTLDs attracting multiple requests include .group, .art and .shop
ICANN said that it had received 1,930 requests for its first round of new domain names from 60 countries. More than 900 of the applications were from North America, with more than 650 from Europe and just 17 from Africa.
It costs 185,000 dollars (£118,800) to submit an application but there was a support programme for needy applicants, ICANN said.
Anyone with an objection to any of the claims can lodge their complaint within the next seven months.
ICANN president and CEO Rod Beckstrom said he expected some of the requests to be challenged.
"Some names might be provocative, some might be controversial to some but not to others. We expect challenges."
ICANN said it hopes the first batch of new domains will be allocated in the first quarter of 2013.
"Africa is abundant with engineering opportunity. We look at some of the projects and the problems."
