ICAO head puts green message into practice
The Air Canada A319 used for the second of the biofuel journey.
Credit: AirbusRaymond Benjamin, secretary general of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), made a series of connecting international flights powered by sustainable alternative fuels as he travelled to the UN’s Rio +20 environment and climate change conference on sustainable development.
“I am proud to have been able to serve as a symbolic passenger on this ‘Flightpath to a Sustainable Future’,” Benjamin commented on his arrival in Rio de Janeiro.
The landmark initiative involved the contribution of airlines, manufacturers, fuel developers, airports and other industry groups.
Benjamin left Montréal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport aboard a Bombardier Q400 flown by Porter Airlines and powered by a camelina blend. He connected on an Air Canada Airbus A319 using a cooking-oil based fuel supplied by SkyNRG to Mexico City, where a Boeing 777-200 flown by Aeroméxico and powered by an ASA-supplied jet fuel using camelina, jatropha and used cooking oil took him to São Paulo, Brazil.
The last leg of Benjamin’s journey saw him flown by Brazil’s GOL Airlines aboard a Boeing 737-800 using fuel derived from inedible corn oil and used cooking oil supplied by UOP, a Honeywell company.
