Secure remote access continues to be top concern

Some 353 enterprise network administrators were surveyed by VanDyke Software, and asked to rank their top three security management priorities from a list of 11. The rankings in full were:

1. Securing remote access - 52%
2. Keeping virus definitions up to date - 44%
3. Patching systems - 36%
4. Monitoring intrusions - 33%
5. Secure file transfer - 30%
6. Network use monitoring - 28%
7. User awareness - 26%
8. Password management - 16%
9. User training - 11%
10. Managing logs - 11%
11. Replacing non-secure protocols - 11%

Also asked “What keeps you up at night?”, 39 per cent cited a network security breach, followed by ‘Your users’ which was selected by 38 per cent in 2010, and ‘Your recovery plan (or lack thereof)’ which was selected by 32 per cent. Those who ‘sleep like a baby’ decreased to 26 per cent in 2010 from 36 per cent in the 2009 edition of the VanDyke Software survey.

The 2010 study was conducted online by Amplitude Research during April 2010 among nationwide IT web panelists: 353 surveys were completed by respondents who confirmed working as a ‘network or systems administrator’ for their company/organisation, with a maximum sampling margin of error of 5.2 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence level.
