How do I get started?

Step 1: Download the E&T iPad app for free from the Apple App Store. You can also search for the app using the search terms "E&T" or "Engineering & Technology".

Step 2: If you’re using an Apple device with iOS 5, tap the E&T cover in your Newsstand folder to open the app. If your device uses an older operating system, tap the E&T icon on your device.

Step 3: For IET members - Tap the "Sign in" button at the top-left corner of the screen. A pop-up window will appear. Enter your membership number as username and your surname as password.

Once you tap the "Sign in" button, your details will be authenticated. This will only take a few seconds. Once successful, you will be offered issues to download.

How do I find my membership number?

Your membership number is on your membership card.

If you are not an IET member

Tap the Subscribe link at the top-left corner of the screen.

Enter your Apple ID and password and follow the instructions.

For a free sample issue click on the "Download" button next to the issue marked "Free".

Do IET members have to pay for the E&T iPad edition?

The E&T iPad edition is a free benefit to all current IET members.

I can’t remember my membership number. How can I find out what it is?

1. You’ll find your membership number on your IET membership card.

2. If you have registered on the IET website you can find your membership number by logging into My IET.

With which month’s edition will my iPad subscription start?

You will have access to the current edition from the date that you first log in and then all forward issues from that date onwards.

Will IET members continue to receive the E&T magazine in print?

Yes, E&T will continue to be mailed out to IET members as a fundamental part of your membership

When will the monthly E&T iPad editions be available?

We aim to publish the iPad edition within a week of you receiving your print copy.

Now I can get the magazine on my iPad, do I have to receive the print copy?

E&T magazine is a valued element of IET membership and you are entitled to receive it each month. If you wish to stop receiving the hard copy, please email membership@theiet.org with your details.

Can I access back issues on my iPad?

You can access all back issues going back to the date you first logged in.

What is the E&T app called in the App Store?

You can search for the app using multiple search terms: e.g. "E&T", "Engineering & Technology", "E&Tmag".

Why can’t I see this month’s E&T edition in my Newsstand or on my iPad?

We occasionally experience technical issues with Apple that can delay publishing the magazine app.

Is E&T available on Android mobile devices?

Not at the moment. As 80 per cent of tablet PCs used are iPads, we have developed our first app for the iPad. We are keen to see how well it works and gain feedback from our users before moving into the Android market.

I entered my membership number and surname but nothing is happening.

Check you have completed all of the on-screen instructions to complete both steps of the sign-in process and you tapped the Submit button. IET members will need to ensure they are using the correct membership number and that their IET membership fees are up-to-date.

General iPad questions

How does the iPad edition subscription work?

The iPad edition subscription will be automatically renewed until auto renewal is turned off. Otherwise, Apple will bill you at the beginning of each subscription period.

Can I cancel my iPad edition subscription and receive a prorated refund for the time remaining?

No. Apple does not allow you to cancel a subscription in the middle of the period and receive a prorated refund.

I am having general problems with my app.

You may need to restart the application by double tapping on the round home button on the front of your iPad. The apps that are running on your device will appear along the bottom row. 

Hold down the icons until they “shake". 

Tap on the red circle to close the app and reset your application. This does not delete the app, but just stops it from running.

Double tap the home button again to return to all of your apps.

Re-open the app.

What is iOS 5?

iOS is Apple’s mobile operating system, which is the software that your iPad runs on. iOS 5 is an update that adds new features and improvements, including changes that affect your E&T app.

How do I update my iPad to iOS 5?

To get the free iOS 5 software update, just connect your iPad to your Mac or PC, open iTunes and follow the instructions.

What is Newsstand?

Newsstand is a feature introduced by Apple that changes the way you access magazines on your iPad. Newsstand is a folder that replaces your E&T icon and keeps your subscriptions in one place.

How do I get Newsstand on my iPad?

Get iOS 5 by plugging your iPad into your computer.

Tap on your App Store icon and accept the latest update to E&T app.

The E&T icon on your iPad will disappear. You will now find E&T in your Newsstand folder represented as a cover of the latest issue of E&T.

Tap the image of our cover to read the latest issue and access your library.

Why is my E&T app icon no longer on my screen?

Once you install the latest version of E&T app and accept an upgrade to iOS 5, the E&T icon on your iPad will disappear. You will now find E&T appearing as a cover in your Newsstand folder. To read the latest edition and access your library, just tap the cover.

How do I get my magazine to automatically download?

On your iPad, go in to your Settings, click on the Settings tab and slide Automatic Downloads to the on position. You will receive an alert as soon as a new issue is available.

What happens if I don’t upgrade to iOS 5?

If you do not upgrade to iOS 5, you will not see the newsstand icon but can continue to access your issues by tapping on the E&T icon.
